Essay!
Newstyle
International、Skybit
International、Skybit
What are your expectations of the mba program? What contribution do you
think you will make? How will your personal distinctiveness enrich our learning
environment?
First of all, I expect that I will be presented with a challenging
educational environment in your highly respected mba program. Your mba program
offers a solid course curriculum that will allow me to build on my previous
extensive business experience to give me the skills that are required in the
rapidly changing international business world.
Although my business experience is important, it is not enough in the
competitive business environment today to have only practical experience. I
believe that through your mba program, I can learn the theories behind
successful business strategies as well as learn about other organization’s
experiences through the reading of different types of case studies. Reading and
understanding a wide variety of case studies will allow me to learn how to
approach certain business situations as well as to learn how to avoid some
business mistakes that others have made in the past.
In addition to learning in a classroom situation from my professors, I know
that I will learn much more than that by gaining the life experiences of living
in a foreign country. The opportunity to learn by living and experiencing life
in another country will make me a more complete business person by giving me the
chance to look at the business world from another country’s perspective. An
international perspective is essential to being successful in business as the
different countries in the global business environment become increasingly
intertwined and interdependent.
I will also expect to learn much valuable information from my clas *** ates as
we work our way through the mba program together and become friends. Learning
from the most elite students from many different cultures and developing lasting
friendships with them will be another very attractive benefit of studying in
your mba program.
My contribution to this established mba program will be that of an
experienced businessperson in the most populous and rapidly developing country
in the world. My previous experience working in multinational organizations has
given me a very useful working knowledge and first-hand knowledge of the methods
of doing business in China. I have experience with both large and *** all
businesses in China, both as an assistant engineer and a higher level manager. I
have worked with some of the world’s largest companies in China, which gives me
a unique perspective and the ability to contribute not only the Chinese
viewpoint but also a multinational viewpoint to classroom discussions. These
diverse working experiences have given me a very broad-based, cross-functional
knowledge of how to do business in China.
My unique experiences in working as an assistant engineer in the computer
center of Jin Jiang Industrial Co., Ltd. have given me a solid foundation in
actual working knowledge of computer software and computer systems. As a sales
representative for nearly four years with the multinational company 3M in the
southwest region of China, I learned to *** yze buying behavior and develop a
full marketing plan for our products. I also managed a distribution network,
which involved inventory planning, marketing channel studies, incentive program
development and training of new business partners.
With Xerox China Co., Ltd., I performed the duties of a high-level sales
consultant. This position involved *** yzing major potential clients'' needs and
developing an XES (Xerox Engineering System) solution to fit the clients''
technical specifications and budgetary needs. I also worked for three years with
China Hewlett-Packard Co., Ltd. My position as a Supplies Market Development
Manager with the Consumer Business Unit required me to use my thorough
understanding of all aspects of the marketing value chain, including the
*** ysis of market dynamics and developing and implementing annual marketing
plans for the entire business unit. My current position as a Business Director
for AsiaEC.com, Inc., has allowed me to take full responsibility for developing
the business of an e-commerce start up company involved with IT/office equipment
and office consumable products.
As you can see from my extensive and unique business experience in China, I
have much to contribute to the learning environment of your mba program. I
believe that the learning environment can be greatly enhanced by classroom
participation from the students, particularly in an mba program such as yours
that involves the best students from around the world. I am eager to thoroughly
involve myself at the proper times to add my real-life experiences in the
rapidly changing business world of China to give an international perspective to
classroom discussions. I also believe that I can learn to develop a better
international vision and a sense of future business trends while adding my own
experiences to your mba program.

Oneof the most important aspects of a person is his orherjob. Whether a person is a basketballstar, high schoolteacher, or astronaut, it is the job that defines aperson’slife. Even schoolwork determines whatdailyactivities one chooses to do. Workis the essential base of aperson’s livelihood and sets the daily schedule of aperson anddetermines what people that person interacts with.
Oneexampleis my schoolwork. I value my educationand prioritizeit, making sure that I complete my homework before I begintorelax. When I go home, I make itmandatory that my homeworkis done before I begin to do things required for myextracurricularactivities or play. Vacations and doctor appointments are scheduledaround my school yearand school day respectively. Thegroupof friends I decide to associate with is also determined by myacademics. All of my friends also place theireducationfirst, giving all of us no temptations or pressure to go anddo a fun activitybefore the work is done. This results inanenvironment that is based upon my schoolwork and facilitate *** ylearning.
Anotherexamplewould be my father’s job as an airline pilot. Although avery good job, it requires him towork an extremely oddschedule. Forexample, he sometimes may not even be at homefor an entire week and then mayspend the next week not even working. However he and my family have learned how to deal withthis. He gives us his monthly schedule of flightsand we allschedule in time to spend with him. His days can range from coming tomy soccer games, to going to one of mysister’s ballet recitals, tochaperoning a field trip to Sea World. His friends are also, for the majority, fromhis work. Whenever he can, heschedulespoker games with his copilots and also takes us to companyparties. His best friend now is his main copilot and Icansee that they have formed a bond of camaraderie.
Asone cansee, the type of work determines not only one’s daily scheduleand life, butalso the friends that one associates with. For me and myfather, my schoolwork and his piloting determine when weplay work, andspend family time together as well as the people we spend themost timewith. Work tells us what to doeveryday and without it, wewould all be lost.

Please give a brief evaluation of yourself as a leader.Becoming a leader in the business world has been my goal since high school. In order to succeed at any goal, one must first find a path to reach the goal, and then embark on that path. My path to becoming a leader began in high school. While studying in high school, I demonstrated great dedication, a trait necessary for a leader. I mastered several different disciplines. I passed Advanced Placement tests in Art History, Chemistry and Physics, and graduated in the top 5% of my class. I also had the opportunity to exercise actual leadership skills as President of both the Science Club and the Business Club.
At the State University of California at Los Angeles, I continued to serve leadership positions while remaining committed to my studies. I won first place in the Phi Beta Lambda 31st State Leadership Conference in Management and Information Management. Although I worked 36 hours a week at two part-time jobs, in addition to participating in this conference, I as able to maintain my grades. I joined the General Education Honors Program. Upon entering the working world, I found that the value of leadership is priceless. The climate has changed drastically, from a cooperative, serene learning environment to a place where only the fittest survive. Luckily, my leadership training from high school and college has paid off. I was quickly promoted from purchasing agent to procurement supervisor.
As a further step in becoming a business leader, I recently accepted an offer from Rain Bird to be a buyer/planner. In this role, I am in total control of two product lines that make about $15 million in sales each year. Although I have learned new ways to manage labor and products, in this new position I have finally found my leadership qualities to be inadequate. I need to discover how engineering changes, climate changes, and marketing promotions of Rain Bird and its compe *** s affect my product lines. I want to learn how information systems enhance and ease business transactions, and how to be more productive and efficient in this global economy. After consulting several fellow co-workers who have studied in UCLA's FEMBA Program, I think studying there would help me continue on my path of success.
What do you consider to be your most important personal and professional accomplishments?
I have made my most important personal and professional accomplishments as a member of APICS, the Educational Society for Resource Management. A co-worker introduced me to this organization. At first, I was reluctant to join because I thought, "I already have a degree in operations management; why do I need to join an association in which I would learn nothing new?" As time went on I found out more and more about this prestigious organization and gradually discovered that by contributing to it I could improve my managing abilities. I quickly became certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM). After about a year, I was appointed director of the San Gabriel Valley Chapter of APICS, which is the most cherished accomplishment I have to date.
Running a chapter is like running a *** all business. There is a national body, like a government, which establishes by laws and rules to which we have to adhere. We have to market ourselves, capture customers(members) and make them happy by offering our products and services. We book classrooms and sponsor workshops on different aspects of manufacturing for members and non-members. Every month we have a joint meeting with the Anaheim chapter which features a renowned speaker. We also create and publish a newsletter every month to update our members about APICS and the latest manufacturing trends. Sometimes we solicit companies in the San Gabriel Valley about the possibility of offering APICS classes onsite. The greatest challenge in directing an APICS chapter is in financing all of the chapters activities.
The most valuable benefit I have gained from being an APICS director has been the ties I have developed with fellow directors and members. In APICS, I continually meet new colleagues. They come from large and *** all companies, and in positions from receiving clerks to vice presidents. We all meet to discuss the latest trends in manufacturing and job opportunities around the area. By learning from each other, we can improve our companies' bottom lines. As an APICS director, I have learned a lot about marketing and finance. I would not have been able to gain such valuable knowledge without hands-on experience. The entrepreneurial abilities I have developed in this position will prove useful as I move further along my path to business success. Why have you decided to enter the Fully Employed MBA Program? Why is this the appropriate time for you to begin?
There are many reasons why I believe this is the perfect time for me to start the Fully Employed MBA Program at UCLA. With regard to gaining knowledge, I have been learning continuously since high school. During high school summer breaks, I took SAT workshops, and in college, I took classes even in summer quarters. When I graduated and started working, I studied to become CPIM- certified for APICS. Starting the MBA program now is the next most logical step in my career.
In terms of career advancements, I am also pushing myself to the limit. I was quickly promoted to a supervisory level at Rain Bird and to a directing position at APICS. I want to keep my pace on this fast career track. Starting the MBA program now will surely open doors to upper management positions within Rain Bird. With regard to personal goals, I have wanted to go to UCLA since high school. I got accepted by the undergraduate school but financial difficulties forced me to choose a state university. Getting my MBA at UCLA will be a childhood dream coming true. Last but not least in making this the ideal time for me to pursue an MBA is the great support from people around me. My wife believes getting an MBA will improve the quality of our lives; my parents think that with an MBA I can be an exemplary model for my brother and sister; co-workers that are already in the FEMBA program told me the program is excellent and the experience worthwhile; and my plant manager, who is a FEMBA alumna, told me it was the best two and a half years she ever spent in school. With my high expectations and support from others, I am confident that I can succeed at UCLA. I am ready to start the FEMBA program this fall.
